Dr. Benca’s research focuses on the interface between sleep and psychiatric disorders and she has served as principal investigator for a number of basic and clinical research studies, funded by agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.  Her work focuses primarily on the relationship between sleep and neuropsychiatric disorders and has spanned basic research studies in animal models to clinical research studies and clinical trials in humans. She has authored over 150 articles, reviews and book chapters as well as a single-authored handbook, Sleep Disorders: The Clinician’s Guide to Diagnosis and Management, published by Oxford University Press. She has served as President of the Sleep Research Society and on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.  She serves as Editor-in-chief of Current Sleep Medicine Reports and Insomnia Section Editor of UpToDate.
